CSI recently hosted a professional development event focused on sex therapy, offering graduate counseling candidates and early‑career clinicians a valuable opportunity to further their knowledge in an essential and often underrepresented area of practice.
The webinar featured an experienced clinician specializing in sexuality and relational wellness, who guided participants through foundational principles of sex therapy, common presenting concerns, and evidence‑informed approaches for supporting clients. Attendees explored topics such as communication patterns, intimacy challenges, cultural considerations, and the role of the counselor in fostering healthy, affirming conversations about sex and relationships. Finally, information was shared on how to become a certified sex therapist and the additional training this certification requires.
What made the event especially impactful was its emphasis on professional competence and ethical practice. Participants not only expanded their clinical understanding but also engaged in thoughtful dialogue about how to create inclusive, trauma‑informed, and LGBTQIA+ affirming spaces when addressing sexuality in counseling.
The CSI leadership and counselor education faculty would like to thank Dr. Merrill for sharing her expertise with us.
