We are grateful to everyone who joined us for our recent film screening of Death by Numbers (a film on how a school shooting survivor confronted her assailant in a poetic journey to empowerment) and community conversation. This event powerfully affirmed the importance of healing-centered, trauma-informed work across education, counseling, and social work services. The screening resonated with attendees, offering an honest and moving exploration of trauma, violence prevention, school- and community-based supports, and the lasting impact of violence on individuals and communities. Participants shared how the film created space for reflection, helping many reconnect with the emotional foundations of the work we do every day.
At the heart of the evening was a shared recognition of the transformative power of creative expression, especially writing, as a pathway to healing, empowerment, and reclaiming one’s voice. Attendees reflected on how storytelling and creative practices can serve as vital tools in both personal recovery and collective healing.
Following the screening, the live Q&A with Sam Fuentes was a highlight of the evening. The conversation was thoughtful, courageous, and engaging, inviting interdisciplinary dialogue around:
- Supporting survivors and communities impacted by violence
- The role of educators, counselors, and social workers in advocacy and prevention
- Sustaining resilience and healing-centered practices within schools and communities
Participants expressed appreciation for the openness and honesty of the dialogue, noting how meaningful it was to engage across disciplines in a shared commitment to healing and justice. This event became a collective moment of learning, connection, and reflection. Attendees emphasized the value of coming together in community, to listen and to deepen our responsibility to the communities we serve.
